Contemporary Medical Acupuncture is a precise peripheral nerve stimulation technique in which fine needles are inserted, using a painless needling technique, to target nerves, muscles and other structures that are contributing towards clinical problems. The needles can be stimulated manually or with electricity for the therapeutic purpose of modulating abnormal activity of the nervous system.
Acupuncture can be used to relieve pain, alter movement patterns and enhance overall performance. It releases tight and sore muscles, improves circulation and muscle activation, and restores a normal range of motion. This ancient practice is also believed to correct the blockage of energy flow and restore a balanced energy flow to the entire body.
Additionally, using electro-acupuncture can help "clean up" dysfunctional areas of the body that may be causing pain or injury. The added electrical stimulation decreases pain signals, increases blood flow to help tissue healing, increases motor control, normalizes muscle recruitment patterns and regulates the nervous system.
All of our chiropractors have completed the Contemporary Medical Acupuncture Program at McMaster University, the physiotherapists have completed the IMS/Functional Dry Needling course. Both of these courses focus on the science-based application of acupuncture and the practitioners select needle insertion points based on their extensive knowledge of neuromuscular anatomy.
Many people associate the needles used in acupuncture with the needles used for other medical purposes, however acupuncture needles are very different. They are thin, fine and fairly flexible. They measure approximately 0.22-0.25mm in diameter which is as thin as a human hair!
Patient comfort is the utmost of importance for us. Your practitioner will work with you to develop a treatment plan that best suits your needs as well as comfort level.
